Handmade Gifts:
Among The Ruins

After an amazing day of browsing through shops on Etsy, I came across Among The Ruins, a cool shop full of unexpected and unique treasures such as this belt buckle:

Kim Curtis is the very talented artist behind Among the Ruins. She is also a violinist and pianist. Kim started making jewelry last March, after her sister introduced her to altered art. She started out by making some altered books, then moved on to altered art bottles. Then Kim found Etsy, and discovered Steampunk! That was it! She finally knew what she wanted to be when she grew up: A jewelry artist!

Kim is as down-to-earth as they come, and so is her jewelry. She loves the honesty and simplicity of working with natural, raw materials; and re-purposing old, used up things, giving them new life. Kim loves honoring things that deserve honor, such as a piece made of wood that was painted 100 years ago and has never been touched since. Most of the paint has worn off and left a beautiful patina - a hint of it's former beauty and youth, yet it is absolutely covered with the overwhelming beauty of having survived the ages. Edges are softened, corners are rounded. It is a gentler thing than it once was, a more valuable thing. There are so many kinds of beauty in the world, each with its own merit and place. As for Kim, she is most at home with old beauty, found among the ruins...
